9
Every good pop collection has that one moment, that shimmering, seamless mix of voice, rhythm and melody, that reflects–and often transcends–the colors and styles of the entire package. On 9, the first studio album in three years from Italian singer Eros Ramazzotti, it’s “No Te Prometo Nada” (“I Don’t Promise You Anything”), a bittersweet ballad that finds the singer exposing his flawed heart to his lover. This is a hushed, affecting moment. Much of the rest of 9 finds Ramazzotti in pleasantly familiar territory, his nasal delivery distinguishing pop ditties such as “Un Segundo De Paz” and “Piedra Pequena.” Some of the silky production sheen of past efforts has been traded in for more acoustic instrumentation; coupled with Ramazzotti’s heartfelt interpretations, the result is a more intimate feel. Make no mistake, though: Ramazzotti is a pop singer by definition. And when it’s done this expertly, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that....

While I’m Awake
The new album of Giovanca ‘While I’m Awake’ is out now!
Giovanca: “While I’m awake… I realised that I have two lives: a night one and a day one. The resulting fatigue goes deep down in my head and my heart. It gives me an insomniac’s view of the world—and that forms the inspiration for this album.” ...

Never Ever Going Back
Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen is a rare and wonderful combination, equal parts musician, poet and storyteller. This enjoyable Scandinavian lady is hailed by Norwegian press as “three parts Monroe and one part Holiday”. Hilde Louise’s poetry is hypnotic. Her instrumental arrangements are like dark, expencive chocolate – rich, sweet-tasting, and very satisfying, while leaving you wanting more! Hilde Louise Orchestra, a collection of Norway’s best known musicians, is led by keyboardist and musical director Anders Aarum. (quote Skoot Larsson)...

New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh
Erykah Badu brought a baby daughter into the world February 1, via a midwife-attended home birth in Brooklyn. Badu and boyfriend Jay Electronica took turns tweeting every detail as the birth unfolded. Badu seemingly postponed the release because of the pregnancy and her leading role alongside Mos Def in the indie film, Bobby Zero. Needless to say, Badu’s a busy, busy lady....

Still Standing
Still Standing’s title track was issued as a single weeks prior to Monica’s BET reality series of the same name, which debuted in October 2009. Even though the song is a potent, low-profile anthem akin to a grown-up and feminized spin on T.I.’s “What You Know,” it topped out in the 70s of the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album seemed like it might be dead well before release until “Everything to Me” — based on Deniece Williams’ 1981 quiet storm “Silly” — trailed in February and was in the Top Ten within a month, significantly raising the profile for Monica’s fifth album. Some fans will be irritated that it took Monica three-and-a-half years to follow up a ten-song album with a set of equally brief length, but Still Standing benefits from quality control and a handful of particularly strong ballads. If the album is missing anything, it’s the sharp and casual wrath last dealt in “Sideline Ho.” Instead, we get her singing different lyrics over Evelyn King’s similarly cautionary and aggressive “Betcha She Don’t Love You” for “If You Were My Man” (like “Everything to Me,” a collaboration with Missy Elliott and the ever-undervalued Jazmine Sullivan), so it’s really not that much of a problem....

I’m Still Here
After finding quick fame with her 1996 debut Ten Thousand Angels, McCready embarked on a career that declined and then disassembled. Her follow-up, If I Don’t Stay the Night, managed gold sales, but 1999′s I’m Not So Tough had little success and she was dropped by her label. A self-titled album in 2002 scratched the bottom of the charts with the single “Maybe, Maybe Not,” and McCready soon became more infamous than famous. A well publicized arrest of her ex-boyfriend for attempted murder, suicide attempts, drug addition and multiple entanglements with the law replaced studio sessions, hit singles, live concerts and awards shows....
