Arielle Dombasle

Amor Amor

Amor Amor

Arielle Dombasle is a French film actress with more than 50 movies to her credit, and now she’s trying her hand as a kind of torch singer. The vintage material and arrangements on Amor Amor certainly evoke an era of sophisticated bands and witty and heartfelt material, be it the classic “As Time Goes By” or “Quireme.” With her breathy voice and accent — and singing in both Spanish and English — Dombasle makes the most of her abilities to generate a little heat and sensuality, and it helps that much of the material is familiar, like “Cuando Calienta el Sol.” Amor Amor aims at being nostalgically chic, with several exotic shades of Cuba in some of the arrangements...

Guru 8.0 Lost And Found

Guru 8.0 Lost And Found

On May 19, 2009, legendary emcee Guru (GangStarr, Jazzmatazz) and producer
Solar will release their latest collaboration Guru 8.0 Lost & Found(7 Grand
Records).“Solar and I have produced three classic albums (Version 7.0: The
Street Scriptures, Jazzmatazz Vol. 4 and The Timebomb / Back To The Future).
It was necessary for us to follow-up with another classic to keep real
hip-hop alive. It’s been lost and needs to find its way. Here at 7 Grand,
real hip-hop can still be found. We are keeping it very much alive!”
exclaims legendary emcee Guru. “Our new album, Guru 8.0 Lost & Found,
produced by Solar is like your GPS navigating you towards a higher place.””
Solar adds, “8.0 represents that next level of growth; the next evolution of
intelligent hip-hop.Lyrically and production-wise, it’s on another level.”...

Adriano Celentano

Per Sempre

Per Sempre

Celentano’s amazing career continued with this 2002 release. His mature, emotionally resonant baritone dips into bass and pops into a higher register now and then, but it’s the way he twists his tongue around the Italian words, now driving, n…ow caressing, now speaking them, and always with a tangible depth of experience and feeling, that makes him such an interesting vocalist. Yet he is never over the top, always in control. Listen to how he turns a phrase like “gli bastera’ una lacrima” (a tear will be enough for him) into a narrative journey all by itself in one of the album’s best songs, “I Passi che Facciamo” (the steps that we take) to get a sense of how good he is. His voice works very well with the piano, guitar, and percussion, which range from a slightly jazzy feel to a bright bounce to soulful balladeering. Some of the songs are rougher than others, but all demonstrate his mastery, and even if you don’t know Italian you will respond to Celentano’s voice....

Stacey Kent

Dreamsville

Dreamsville

Vocalist Stacey Kent may or may not be ‘the greatest ballad singer in half a century,’ as her PR claims, but her straightforward renditions of these by-request ballads are not at all generic. What makes them consistently delightful is her unique sound and delivery. There’s a certain brassiness, a trumpet-like pointedness, in her voice, as well as a host of endearing idiosyncrasies. Listen to her pronounce the word ‘idea’ in George and Ira Gershwin’s ‘Isn’t It a Pity?’ Or deliver these remarkable lyrics from the same song: ‘What joys untasted!/You, reading Heine/Me, somewhere in China.’ And later, ‘My nights were sour, spent with Schopenhauer.’ Kent knows how to make every tune fit her own musical persona. Dreamsville includes a number of seldom-heard gems, particularly ‘You Are There’ by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg, ‘You’re Looking at Me’ by Bobby Troup, and the ever-stunning title track by Henry Mancini....
